About Our Tin-Plated Steel

Tinplate, also known as electrolytic tinplate (ETP), has a low carbon steel core covered with tin that can be similar or different on each side.

Tinplate consists of five layers that each perform a specific role, including:

• Steel base – Due to the strength and thickness of the material, the steel base provides stiffness and resists corrosion.
• Iron-tin alloy – This alloy is made of inter-metallic compound Fe-Sn2 that acts as a barrier due to its electrochemical characteristics.
• Metallic tin – This serves as a fundamental barrier against corrosion in different food applications, provides a foundation for lithographic printing, and proves effective for applying lacquers.
• Passivation film – Due to its characteristics, this film makes it possible to improve the electrolytic tinplate to sulphiding, oxidation and rust.
• Oil film – Using the electrostatic oiler on both ends of the sheet, the oil film protects the tin-plated steel sheet from the environment and facilitates easier handling.

Electrolytic tinplate sheets can be used for stamped parts, lids and ends, oval and cylindrical two-piece cans, rectangular cans, and crown caps for soft drinks.

Some recommendations for product handling include:

• The material should be stored in a humidity-free environment and never left outdoors to prevent the risk of oxidation.
• Never handle ETP without gloves and use it immediately after opening.
• When necessary to wet objects made from tinplate, dry them properly using compressed air or an oven.
